BRIEF HISTORY

The foundation of the Seminary of Manizales, both major and minor combined, was decided at the very moment of the erection of the Diocese of Manizales, decreed by the Holy See on April 11, 1900. The Seminary was founded by decree on December 14, 1901; it began its work in the parish of Aranzazu on February 1, 1902, with 80 students; five or six months later, the Seminary moved to Manizales. Since then, and until 1949, the Seminary was directed by the diocesan clergy.

Starting in 1950, by the will of Monsignor Luis Concha, the Society of Priests of Saint Sulpice (Province of Canada) assumed the direction of the Major Seminary, and from that date, the Minor Seminary was separated, beginning to function as an independent entity, with its own rector.

Throughout its existence, the Seminary has formed more than 650 priests: 180 from 1902 to 1949, when it was directed by diocesan priests, and 468 from 1950 to 2003, under the direction of Sulpician priests.

Until 1949, priests from the same diocese served as formators in the Seminary. Beginning in 1950, Canadian Sulpician priests became formators with the collaboration of diocesan priests; later, Colombian Sulpician priests joined the Seminary as vocations to the Society of Saint Sulpice arose.
