St. Joseph Seminary – Edmonton

BRIEF HISTORY

In 1927, Archbishop Henry Joseph O’Leary of Edmonton inaugurated Saint Joseph Seminary, which had 26 seminarians in the building that previously housed the Scholasticate of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The Seminary moved to a building on St. Albert Trail (now Marc Messier Trail) in 1957.

In 1990, the Canadian Province of the Priests of Saint Sulpice accepted the direction of the Seminary and appointed Fr. Lionel Gendron, PSS, currently Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Saint-Jean-Longueuil, as its first rector. He was succeeded by Fr. Marc Ouellet, PSS (1994), current Cardinal Emeritus Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops; Fr. Jean Papen (1997); Fr. Luc Bouchard (2000), current Bishop Emeritus of Trois-Rivières; Fr. Louis-Paul Gauvreau, PSS (2002); Fr. Lionel Gendron, PSS (2003); and Fr. Kevin Beach (2004–2005); Fr. Shayne Craig, PSS (2005–2012) and Fr. Stephen Hero (2012 – 2021).

In partnership with the Seminary since 1969, Newman Theological College offers theology courses and grants university degrees. The overall formation covers at least a five-year period: two years of formation and theology at the seminary, followed by a full year of pastoral internship, and then a return to the seminary for a 3^rd and 4^th year. One can do preliminary studies in philosophy before entering theology, either at Newman Theological College by taking two years of courses in philosophy, or at Concordia University College by completing a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. Admission to the theology program requires a first university degree.
